UNYF was founded in 1994 by United Nations Association (Colombo) at the request of School UN Clubs of Royal College, Muslim Ladies College, St. Joseph's College and Hindu College. later on Sirimavo Bandaranayake Vidyalaya, Hindu Ladies College, Holy Family Convent, Thurstan College, Nalanda College, Bishops College, Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Zahira College,  Mahanama College, Ramanathan Hindu Ladies College, St. Mary's Convent (Matara) and Alloysius College (Ratnapura) obtained the membership in 1996 and 1997 and formed the United Nations Youth Federation with a UNYF Council, Board of Management and Program Co-ordination Unit to centrally operate and co-ordinate in supporting UN Clubs in Schools.

The initial formation of UNYF as United Nations Youth Association (UNYA) was supported by Mr. Robert England, UN Resident Co-ordinator in Sri Lanka (1994) and Mr. Mohan Samaranayake (National Information Officer, UNIC). The support was extended by Mr. Arve Ofstad (1997), UN Resident Co-ordinator in Sri Lanka and United Nations Youth Federation was officially formed and in operation by 1997.

OBJECTIVE

To assist all communities and organizations to build a united nation. a land of peace, development and opportunities for the younger generation.

PURPOSE
The Federation will look into, not only supporting Student & Youth matters, but also to plan and support the National Development Plans in order to set a peaceful and developed environment to create local opportunities for the social, economical and spiritual growth of the next generation’ livelihood.
